Field Day at ThunderRidge is arguably the best day of the year. Being united with peers and competing in Field Day events is a huge hit throughout the school, and occupies much of your time between seminar, before school, and after school. Every year the competition gets stronger and harder to beat between every grade. The dedication and effort put into this one day is admirable, and the exhilarating feeling of competition and unity is at its strongest this day. Will the seniors and sophomores win this field day like every year, or will the freshmen and juniors fight harder and steal the throne?
To kick off Homecoming week, Monday September 23rd, the Powder Puff game between the freshmen and sophomores started at 6pm at Shea Stadium. The first touchdown scored by the sophomores was not counted due to the fact that the ball was caught 4 inches from the touchdown line. The first half was very close between the two competing teams. Halftime started with the freshman in the lead by 2 points. Third quarter, Kylie Bahr scored the first touchdown to take the lead. The remainder of the game, the sophomores were able to stay in the lead winning the game sophomores 15, Freshmen 2. The game between the Seniors and Juniors started with great intensity. The score for the match fluctuated at the beginning until Seniors took control of the game and won 12-6.
Tuesday night, Freshmen and Sophomores played a tough game of Ultimate Frisbee. The Sophomores were able to hold back the Freshmen to a shutout, not allowing the other team to score. The sophomores dominated the field finishing with a score of 12-0. The Seniors took the field against the Juniors next, and it was an exciting match. The game was very close the entire time. At the very end of the game, seconds before the buzzer, the Juniors were able to score the winning point, and become the 2019 champions of Ultimate Frisbee.
Starting at 6pm, in the Main Gym, Wednesday night Ruff n’ Tuff for underclassmen was underway. The Sophomore team, in white, started and finished the volleyball game strong, winning both halves of the game (Sophomores 23, Freshmen 9). The Upperclassmen’s game began at 7:30, the Seniors started off very strong and were at least 5 points ahead of the Juniors the entire game. Finishing the first half with a win, the seniors played with even more intensity to run away with the win. The upperclassmen game ended with a score of Seniors 25 Juniors 15.
Thursday night, beginning at 7, the varsity football team played Doherty High School at Shea Stadium. The beginning of the game was an even match with both teams showing their strong defense. After a few injuries and a touchdown, Royalty came out on top at halftime. After halftime Thunderridge persevered and mounted a fantastic comeback and ended the game on top of Doherty High School with a score of 24 - 7.
During halftime the Homecoming Royalty was crowned for each class. Freshmen, Nic Vicic and Trinity Wells, were named Royalty for their class. Sophomores, Kaitlyn Mills and Brett Dawson were named Royalty for their class along with Juniors Cameron Cooper and Colton K representing the Juniors. As the seniors walked down the football field for the last time, Lexi Jacques and Connor Ryan wore the sash claiming the last title of Royalty for their class.
Friday beginning at 11:30, Seniors were invited down to the gym to enjoy their final Field Day. During the week, each class earned points for each challenge taken. In the lead, the Seniors and Sophomores started to battle harder as the competition got stronger. With only a few minutes left the Seniors and Juniors were tied, each with 195 points. Thomas Sullivan (Sully) the school’s beloved teacher pulled a random event out of a fanny pack to determine the Winner of Field day. The event picked was the Dance competition from earlier that day. Since the seniors won for dance category, they became victors of field day. Sophomores won Field day with a total of 215 points.
This was an epic week to be remembered, especially for the seniors as this was their last time to take the field against the rest of the school. This field day set the bar even higher for next year, so start planning because the competition will be fierce.
